How to Cook Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot Recipe (5-5-5 Method) (1)

Instant Pots are one of the most popular kitchen gadgets right now and these Hard Boiled Eggs just might be the most popular thing to make in them.

If you want perfectly cooked eggs that peel easily every single time, then we can show you how to make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot.

How to cook Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot:

The first step is to place a steamer basket in the Instant Pot. Then, place 12 eggs directly in the steamer basket. If you don’t have a steamer basket, see below.

Now you don’t have to cook all 12. If you want 1 egg, the time would still be the same.

Add at least 1 cup of water. Some have shared that if you completely cover the eggs, fewer eggs will crack.

Place the lid on the Instant Pot. Make sure the knob is turned to “Sealing,” not “Venting.” Push the “Manual” button and set for 5 minutes.

While the eggs are coming to pressure and cooking, prepare an ice bath. After the eggs have cooked for 5 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes, then you can do a quick release.

Remove the steamer basket and eggs and place in the ice bath. Allow the eggs to cool for 5 minutes in the ice bath.As you peel, crack the egg and gently peel. They will be the easiest eggs you’ve ever peeled! Every time!

What if I don’t have a steamer basket? Where can I get a steamer basket?

This is the steamer basket that I have and love. Bonus! It comes with 2 extra 6 quart Instant Pot Sealing Rings.

Having a steamer basket makes transferring the hard boiled eggs from the Instant Pot to the ice bath so easy! I also recommend having a second Instant Pot liner for your ice bath. Find it here.

If you don’t have a steamer basket, you can still make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot. Simply nestle the eggs in the pot or on top of the trivet. Add water and you are good to go!

What is the 5-5-5 method for Hard Boiled Eggs?

The 5-5-5 method is one of the most popular techniques for making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. The 5’s refer to:

  • Setting the cook time for 5 minutes
  • After cook time, a 5 minute natural release
  • Cooling the eggs in the ice bath for 5 minutes

How can I keep my eggs from cracking?

I’ve made the hard boiled eggs with just 1 cup water, but I always seem to have at least one egg that cracks. A reader recommended filling the pot with water until all the eggs are covered to avoid cracking eggs. Give it a try!

What is the purpose of the ice bath?

An ice bath is simply a container of ice water that you can place the eggs in after the 5 minute natural release. Placing the eggs in the ice bath cools them quickly and stops them from overcooking. If you want your eggs to be just right, don’t skip the ice bath.

Ever since I started doing the ice bath, my eggs are a lot easier to peel. You will have to let me know if you can tell a difference.

  1. Jane says:

Just made hard boiled eggs in my new IP for first time. They were brownish and the yolks were dark on the outer edge when they were done. I used eggs from different stores, not planned that way, but same reaction so I’m not sure what happened. Any suggestions?

  2. Lois Morse says:

I just made eggs in mine today. I have been reading different recipes and went with this one. I learned to not let the eggs touch the water so I put my normal rack in and my egg rack (Oxo 9-egg silicone rack) on top of that. My eggs are from a friend who has chickens. They turned out beautifully with not one crack (I've had at least one crack each time before). I also try to pick eggs that are equal in size. Try it again!

  3. Colleen Casey says:

Best method I've ever tried. I have farm fresh eggs and they alway come out perfect with this method. Farm fresh are the hardest eggs to hard boil, you always loss so much egg with other methods. Now my eggs come out perfect.

  4. Pauline Ohadi says:

My Instant Pot does not have a manual button so please give me directions for my type of IP. Thank you.

  5. PAULINE OHADI says:

That happened to my eggs also, they were brownish and the yolks were dark on the outer edge when they were done. I learned that it was because when 5 minutes past, I did not remove the eggs quick and the warmer remained on cooking the eggs for another 30 minutes, maybe it was an hour before I took the eggs out of the IP. YOU MUST REMOVE THE EGGS IMMEDIATELY AFTER 5 MINUTES. PLACING THEM IN ICE CUBES WATER WOULD ELIMINATE THIS, IF YOU DID IT RIGHT AWAY.

  6. Cyd says:

Manual or Pressure cook are the same thing.

  7. Ginny benton says:

I tried this last night 5-5-5. They were not done in the middle.. wasn’t thrilled

  8. TK says:

How would you adjust the times for cooking at an altitude of 5280 feet?

  9. Audrey says:

Are the eggs on low med or high pressure ?

  10. Linda Rhoden says:

Raw...put back in for another five minutes. Still slightly in yolk. Very disappointed.

  11. Linda Booker says:

This is the best way to "boil" eggs ever! The first time I tried it, with one cup of water, there were s few slightly cracked eggs. I just did it again but used 2 cups of water and had no cracks. Not sure if the amount of water helped but thats how I'll do it from now on.

  12. Momma Cyd says:

Hi Linda. It's a game changer!! We are so glad you are using your Instant Pot!

  13. T.G. says:

I had some issues using cold refridgerated eggs in a silicone basket. So I now use the metal rack and let the eggs warm to room temp for a bit prior to cooking. Then 5 5 5. Thanks!

  14. Sherry conrad says:

Thought I would try hard boiled eggs today & they turned out perfect! So impressed

  15. Momma Cyd says:

Cooking eggs to Hard boiled is so easy in the Instant Pot.

  16. Kathy says:

    Eggs were perfect!!

  17. Holly says:

Perfect hard boiled eggs. I did 18 eggs in steamer basket and only 1 egg cracked. I added 4 cups of water.

  18. Carey says:

This did not work for me. Followed recipe and I had trouble peeling and they came out rubbery and tough.

  21. Rick Park says:

I tried this recipe as a new IP owner. The initial try was slightly underdone. Then watching your videos, I realized you were at a higher altitude, while I am just above sea level! Adjusted to 6-6-5, and they turn out perfect every time. If you’re near sea level, this will work, and if at very high altitude, you may have to adjust the other way. The point is that SSS is providing a great starting place, so adjust until right for you!

  22. Michelle says:

Worked perfect for me! I used 1 cup of water.

FAQs

What is the 5 5 5 rule for eggs? ›

Seal Instant Pot and cook on High Pressure for 5 minutes. Let Instant Pot release naturally for 5 minutes. (Release any remaining pressure after 5 minutes.) Cool eggs in ice bath for 5 minutes.

How much water do you use when boiling eggs in an Instant Pot? ›

Add 1/2 to 1 inch of water (1 to 2 cups) to the pressure cooker (check your pressure cooker manual for minimal liquid amounts). The water level should be just below the steamer basket. Add all the eggs: Use cold eggs, straight from the fridge.

How do you use the egg button on the Instant Pot? ›

Plug in the Instant Pot, lock the lid, and position the steam release valve to "sealed." Press the "Egg" button on the Instant Pot. It will pressure cook the pot for five minutes on normal. This will result in hard-boiled eggs. If you want soft-boiled eggs, use the "-" button to reduce the cook time to four minutes.

How do you keep eggs from exploding in an Instant Pot? ›

The trivet helps to keep the eggs nicely arranged so they don't collide during cooking and risk cracking, but the eggs should cook just fine without it. Note that not using a trivet *could* be why your eggs explode in the Instant Pot.

Do eggs have to be submerged in Instant Pot? ›

Make sure your eggs are not submerged in water as this could affect the final result of the eggs. If using warm water, you may want to shorten the time from 5 minutes to 4 minutes, as warm water will take a shorter time to come to pressure.

How many minutes does it take to boil an egg in a pressure cooker? ›

Place eggs in a single layer on the trivet. Seal the lid and cook on High Pressure for your desired time: 3 minutes for soft yolks, 5 minutes for medium, or 7 minutes for fully set whites (see below for exact cooking times). Once the cooking time is up, manually release the pressure.

How long do I boil an egg to make a hard-boiled egg? ›

A soft boiled egg is boiled for a shorter amount of time, typically 4-6 minutes, so that the yolk remains runny while the white is only partially set. A hard boiled egg is boiled for a longer amount of time, typically 10-12 minutes, so that both the yolk and white are fully cooked and solid.

How long do hard boiled eggs last? ›

Hard cooked eggs can be stored in the refrigerator up to seven days, either left in their shells or peeled. Make sure eggs are refrigerated within two hours after cooking, and don't leave refrigerated cooked eggs out at room temperature for more than two hours.

Why do my hard boiled eggs crack in the Instant Pot? ›

Why are my eggs cracking in the instant pot? If your eggs are cracking, it might be because the cooking time is set for too long. Another reason may be that the pressure is too high. You can try lowering the cooking time, and setting the pressure to low to see if that helps your instant pot eggs to stop cracking.

Do you boil water before putting eggs in pot? ›

You might have heard that you should drop your eggs into room temperature or cold water and then bring the water to a boil. This is a myth. In our tests, bringing the water to a boil first and then lowering the eggs into the bath made for easy peeling and more accurate timing.

How do you boil farm fresh eggs in an Instant Pot? ›

Add 1 cup water. Place 2-12 eggs on the rack (so they aren't touching the water). Secure the lid and set lever to “sealing.” Set to manual “high pressure” and set timer for desired doneness (5 min for soft boiled, 6-8 min for medium boiled, 9-10 minutes for hard boiled).

How do you hard boil eggs so they peel easily? ›

Bring to a boil, then cover the pot and turn off the heat. Let the eggs cook, covered, for 9 to 12 minutes, depending on your desired done-ness (see photo). Transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water and chill for 14 minutes. This makes the eggs easier to peel.

How many minutes does it take to boil 5 eggs? ›

Once the water is at a rolling boil, turn off the heat and cover the pot with the lid. Allow the eggs to sit in the hot water for the following times according to the desired doneness: 3 minutes for SOFT boiled; 6 minutes for MEDIUM boiled; 12 minutes for HARD boiled. Prepare a bowl of ice water.

Is 5 hard-boiled eggs too much? ›

For most healthy adults, it's safe to eat 1–2 eggs a day depending on how much other cholesterol is in your diet. If you already have high cholesterol or other risk factors for heart disease, it may be best to eat no more than 4–5 eggs per week.
