If wind moves parallel to the roof, it can create suction that can increase pressure inside the building and cause uplift, or directing of air upward. The connections between the walls and the foundation can make a pole barn vulnerable. If the walls are connected at the foundation, that can allow them to be tilted or forced down by strong winds.
By embedding posts deep in the ground, builders can strengthen the entire structure. With that design, the walls are not connected to the foundation. That can help a pole barn withstand uplift from fierce winds.
Connect Roof Trusses to Columns
Another weak point is the connection between trusses and wall top plates. They are usually connected with toe nails or light gauge steel connectors. If the walls get damaged in a tornado, the roof can also be vulnerable. Connecting roof trusses directly to columns with seven-gauge steel brackets and through bolts can help prevent tornado damage.
Invest in a Strong Design
Building a pole barn that is designed to withstand a tornado will cost you more up front, but you may thank yourself later if a tornado rolls through your area. The extra investment in pole barn construction will likely be much less than you would have to pay out of pocket if your pole barn got destroyed in a tornado and you had to build a new one.
