How Long Does it Take to Build a Barndominium? (2024)

EducationalStyle and Design

Barndominiums, also known as barndos, are becoming increasingly popular for various reasons. Many people like them because the cost per square foot is generally less than that of a stick-built home, and they go up much quicker. So how long does it take to build a barndominium? A good builder can generally finish one up in about 6-8 months.

Once you understand how they’re built, you’ll better understand how that time frame breaks down.

What is a barndominium, and how is it different from a traditional house?

A barndominium is a new type of home becoming popular, especially in rural areas where there is plenty of land to build upon. They usually bring together various design aspects of home building and mix them with a country look to give it a barn-like appearance. These homes have all the features and amenities typical homes have and can be customized to any size and style to fit the buyer’s needs.

The building materials are the most apparent difference between a “barndo” and a traditional stick-built house. Barndominiums are built using steel or metal instead of wood framing. This means that barndominiums are much more durable and require less maintenance than conventional homes. That’s not to say they don’t have wood in them, but the exterior is primarily metal.

Another significant difference is that barndos often have oversized garages or barn-like structures. The living area (i.e., kitchen, bedrooms, etc.) is built around the garage. This isn’t always the case, but it’s where they get their name from.

What makes a barndominium unique is its layout. Sure, there are various degrees of “barn,” but these homes are generally large and open. There is often a loft area or second story that can be used as extra living space, storage, or even a game room. The possibilities are endless!

The construction process of a barndominium is much faster.

Like traditional homes, the build process of a barndominium will vary depending on the size, style, and location. That being said, some general steps are followed when building any home.

Foundation preparation and pouring.

First, the foundation will need to be prepared, and the concrete poured. Most barndominiums are built upon a slab foundation, but that’s not to say you couldn’t go with another type of foundation.

Just like traditional homes, the earth is graded and prepped for concrete. The concrete forms go up, rebar is emplaced, and plumbing is roughed in. Once everything is ready, concrete is poured in a single day and then takes a few weeks to cure fully.

Framing, siding, roofing, windows, and doors.

After the foundation is set, the exterior framing of the home is erected. Metal posts are welded in place, and the metal roof and siding go up shortly after. This is where much of the time is saved in the construction process. Crews will also install the windows and doors during this time. Depending on the crew and the complexity of the design, the overall structure can be erected in a few weeks.

Getting the interior ready.

Once the exterior is up, the interior framing goes in. Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC rough-ins are shortly after. Throw in some spray foam insulation, hang and mud the sheetrock, and the home is done. All of this can take a few weeks to a couple of months. Once everything is set, now it’s time to finish it up.

Applying the finishing touches.

At this point, cabinets, countertops, water, and light fixtures get installed. Flooring and paint go in to give the home its finishing touches. The house is now ready to live in! All in all, the entire process can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months. From my experience, barndos typically take around 6-8 months.

How long does it take to build a barndominium? Faster than a traditional stick-built house, that’s for sure. Delays in materials, labor shortages, and weather can all set back any phase of the build; however, with an excellent general contractor (GC) running the show, you can get it done in 6-8 months.
